Sunday Bests // Winter in the Woods

Hello friends! It’s time for Sunday Bests once again, a series about my church outfits! Today consisted of 18-degree weather in my snow-covered world, mittens, thick stockings, and a new kindred spirit! First, let me show you a bit of my outfit!

(If you notice, both my jacket and bag are pieces from my

Civil War outfit, which you can see here!)

I’ve been yearning to wear these wonderful garments together to church for such a long time, but had to work up the courage to do so. You see, I had once worn my Civil War attire to church last year because we were heading to a reenactment right after the service. Although many people had expressed how remarkable and surprising my outfit was, I also had received some odd looks, as expected! So I was a little weary of fashioning another completely historical outfit today.

My Grandmom told me that I looked like I had stepped out of the Little House on the Prairie, which I took as a great compliment! But here was my dilemma – I planned to attend an event in town after church and was debating wearing my Laura Ingalls ensemble or a chic modern outfit for the event. After all, I had misplaced the shirt I had wanted to wear with my prairie outfit, so I would have to wear my second choice. Nevertheless, the prairie outfit won the silent election.

After the church service, I attended the afternoon event and watched the people around me. Everyone was styling something new and modern, as I had predicted. But then something familiar caught my attention. It was a pair of shoes! They were the same style as my blue ballet shoes that I have and wore in this post!

The shoes I saw were worn by a girl my age who also wore a smile. I wanted to go tell her that I liked her shoes and that I had the same ones in blue and had just gotten them in red as well. My nerve hadn’t collected before it was time to move along. It wasn’t until she came up to me and told me that she liked my shoes that we actually spoke! She went on to say how she loved vintage fashion and was even designing her own 1920s style dress! An instant bond was secured and I instantly gained a kindred spirit! I told her how I felt unsure about my outfit choice for the day, but she replied saying that I shouldn’t be! Just then she had reminded me of something that I had failed to remember – that our own passions shouldn’t be disregarded just because of what others may think! My passion is vintage and historical fashion, and I shouldn’t change that for anything! If I hadn’t worn this outfit today, I probably would not have met my new friend!

It wasn’t just a happy accident that I made a new friend today. I believe that God placed us both there for a reason. Meeting someone who shares your own passions is so exciting! But, it was more than that. It made me think of many things that I had forgotten.

Here’s a list.

  • We are each special and given a unique and personal style that no one else can claim.
  • We shouldn’t change our style, even temporarily, to satisfy someone else.
  • Even if our outfit isn’t perfect, (like me not having the right shirt) God can still use our clothing in a special way. It can open doors to friendships and opportunities, as the clothing we wear represents us and who we are.
  • Being bold and speaking with others is much better than being shy and missing out on the friendships that God has provided.

So to sum up this gathering of new thoughts that have flooded my mind, I leave one last note that I will always keep in my heart.

Romans 8:28 “And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.” KJV

P.S. Thank you, Olivia for inspiring me to be bold and not fear what others may think! You are a very special person who has helped me in my journey, even if we only spoke for 5 minutes!

Sunday Bests // The Rust Colored Garment

Hello everyone! It’s time for Sunday Bests again! I have been waiting to wear this dress ever since I found it in the Summer! I got it at a flea market for a few dollars and fell in love with the shape of the dress! It reminded me of a dress worn by Katharine Hepburn in the 1938 movie “Bringing Up Baby” (one of my favorite movies)! I was a little nervous as to how to it would look because of its odd style. It was hand-sewn by someone many decades ago and has a zipper down the front, a sort of turtle neck collar, a belt, and an odd extra bit of fabric which I think is to be worn as a tie. I left out the tie this time but will try to style it with the outfit someday!

These earrings once belonged to my Great Aunt and I just love wearing them. They’re little white roses carved out of wood and they are probably many decades older than the dress!

Here I am, staring into the sunset, which I wouldn’t recommend.

So, this is a very odd dress, but I still love it. It makes me feel like such a vintage soul! One thing that I think would be fun to have for this outfit is short hair! Again, another post where I didn’t do anything to my hair! When will I ever learn?

Sunday Bests // A Tad 1950s

Hello again! I’m back for Sunday Bests, a series filled with the outfits I wear to church. Last week was crazy and brimming with things to do! Haven’t we all had those days when we wake up and the only thing that gets out us of bed is the thought that we can get back in it after 16 hours of “life.” I find that when my schedule is overflowing, one of the first things to float away is time to put together a great outfit. I managed to piece this outfit together 20 minutes before we had to leave for church, and loved it so much that I wore it all day! In my neck of the woods, Fall has finally arrived and has chilled the air down to coat temperature, so this outfit kept me nice and warm.  Without further ado, here is a tad 1950s outfit!

I love all the accessories that go with this outfit! The scarf, pin, and belt completes the Laverne and Shirley look. After a Sunday night bluegrass concert, we stopped at McDonalds for drinks. I’m not joking when I tell you that “Rock Around the Clock” was playing as we sipped our sodas! I just wasn’t brave enough to get up and start a jive 🙂

I’m actually wearing my belt inside out and backwards. I didn’t have a black belt so I took one with bright red Chinese dragons on it and turned it inside out and used the black side, putting the jeweled buckle in the back which was covered by my hair. (Another good reason for long hair!)

It’s just lovely when you walk into your Sunday School room and find a table full of flowers to take home! This bunch matched the band around my sleeves and my coat buttons wonderfully! To me, flowers are more than just some extra color. Flowers are happiness!

Dancing in the breeze

Little yellow flowers

Huddled round the trees

Little yellow flowers

Seemed to know my pain

In my mem`ry will remain

Today was a 1950s day, with lovely flowers, a bluegrass concert, and a Happy Days enthused McDonald’s visit! Can Sundays get any more interesting?

Sunday Bests / / Denim Flare

Welcome back! This is the first post of my new fashion series “Sunday Bests!” This series will be filled with the outfits I wear to church on Sundays. Some of them will be fully vintage while others will be vintage inspired. I may not be able to post for this series every week, but I will try! I hope you find some inspiration in this series!

3 Denim Flare, Simply Megan Joy Blog.jpg

This is one of my favorite fall and winter dresses. It fits just right, looks vintage, and weighs about thirty pounds! Ok, maybe not thirty, but it is heavy! It’s not quite a full-circle skirt, but it still works well for twirling. I couldn’t wear it for the longest time because I didn’t have any cuff-links for the sleeves. Without them, the sleeves just stay open and look sloppy. Later I found a pair of golden horse cuff-links at a flea market that were perfect for this dress. To finish off the outfit, I added a brown belt with a gold buckle (to match the cuff-links) and my new blue denim ballet slippers. I LOVE THESE SHOES! I got them on clearance at Target and have been aching to wear them with this dress! They are utterly dazzling, I think! Unfortunately, they aren’t very good for dancing as they are very flat, stiff, and quite pointy at the toe. Nevertheless, I adore them!

This dress is quite plain and I didn’t add a lot of accessories to it, so it stayed nice and simple.

Yes, these are the shoes! You may not be able to see it, but the laces go all the way past my ankle, just like real ballet shoes. They also remind me of a medieval style shoe for a lady-in-waiting! And yes, I still make up stories about knights and castles (thanks Princess Bride)!
